Annual WCC Club Championship R3 results, R4 tentative pairings

Hi all - 

OK - we're halfway home, with a single perfect score through Round 3 in each section (well done to Alexander and Jahnav!), it's still a wide open event - good luck to all!

Reminder to all players, coaches and parents - there's a nice rules and etiquette section of the blog that everyone should review every few events until they're deep habits, especially if these are newer concepts to you or your player.  
If this is too much to read, remember (or be sure your player knows) this one rule:

"There's never a reason to say ANYTHING to your opponent while their clock is running.  Not following this rule is formally considered distracting to your opponent, and you could be subject to a time penalty or, for multiple offenses, a game forfeit"

Practically, this means:
  • If you want to offer a draw, do it on YOUR time, before you press the clock.
    • Once you offer a draw, DON'T offer another unless something significant has changed in your game.  Multiple, repeated draw offers is explicitly noted in USCF Rules of Chess: Rule 14B5 as a violation subject to penalty.
    • There's never a need to ask your opponent if they accept your draw offer.  If they accept it, you will know, the game is over.  If they make a move, they have declined the offer.
    • There's never really a need to verbally decline an offer made by your opponent.  Just make a move - this declines the offer.  Of course, you can be polite and say "I decline the offer" or "I'd like to play on", but making your next move formally declines the offer.  
  • If you want to take a look a their game score, fine, ask on YOUR time.
  • Adjusting misaligned pieces is fine, but (say it with me) do it on YOUR time.
    • This makes sense given the one rule above - you'd have to announce it ("I adjust", etc.), but since you SHOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING TO YOUR OPPONENT on their time, you can't announce it, so. therefore, you can't adjust pieces on their time.
  • If you and your opponent don't agree about something material in a game, DON'T ARGUE about it, get a TD.
    • Unless they're on fire, don't talk to them on their clock, get a TD.  Maybe even then...
Not knowing these basic ideas can cost you a time penalty, or even match points, so it helps to know the rules of the game you're playing :)  These links are visible on EVERY blog post page, so there's really no reason to not know them properly.

  • (Mon) Lawrence requests bye in Upper Section
  • (Sun) Landey requests to play R4+ in the Lower Section
  • (Sat) Kerns requests bye in Upper Section
